Pat Lee from HART graciously sent over some information regarding the proposed train station names for the Honolulu Rail Transit Project. The station names reflect forgotten place names, historic events, and significant sites in Hawaiian culture. It is hoped that the names will perpetuate the traditions, culture, and history of Hawaiʻi and help knit the rail system into the fabric of Oʻahu. The station names were recommended by HART’s Hawaiian Station Naming Working Group, whose members used diverse community knowledge, oral accounts, and written history to come up with the names. The ‘Aiea Public Library will be celebrating its 5th anniversary (that is, the 5th anniversary of the library’s new location at 99-374 Pohai Place) on Saturday, July 13 from 10am to 4pm. To celebrate, the library will be holding a Mini Comic Con and refreshments. Learn how to draw using shapes, watch a Saber Academy demonstration, participate in a cosplay parade, and more!

On the following Saturday, July 20, 2019 from 10am to 3pm, the Friends of the ‘Aiea Library will be holding its semiannual used book sale at the ‘Aiea Public Library’s program room. Come down for a variety of cheap books and other media! All proceeds will go to support the valuable programs offered by the ‘Aiea Public Library.

In December of last year, with the help of Master Hale Builder, Kumu Francis Sinenci and hoaaloha from Hale Hale Kuhi Kuhi, the E Alu Pū network, Kuaʻāina Ulu ʻAuamo, and skilled hale builders from across the paeʻāina, we laid the kahua (foundation) for a hale at Kaʻonohi Loʻi. For this month’s First Saturday Community Workday, we will continue this laulima work.  We envision this place to be a gathering space for community building, ʻāina restoration, and friendship, and we invite you to come learn and build hale with us!

All ages are welcome, but this month in particular we need a core group of strong backs and hands to help put in the rest of the posts and debark and prepare wood for olokea (scaffolding). 

Please park at Sears Pearlridge at 98-180 Kamehameha Highway and walk down the road next to Sumida Farm. Kaʻonohi Loʻi is at the end of the road.

Things to bring:

• Recommended long sleeve shirts and other clothes that can get wet and muddy
• Tabis, work boots, or closed toe shoes that can get wet and muddy
• Hat
• Sunscreen
• Water and water bottle
• Gloves and tools (pick, shovel, sickle)
• A small dish for potluck
• Friends!

UPDATE: The ACA meeting for February will be on Monday, February 18th, 2019 (President’s Day) at 7:30pm at the regular place (‘Aiea Library).

Note that the Aiea Community Association’s February 2019 meeting will be Rescheduled to a date to be determined. Please watch this space for the updated date. Mahalo!

Just a reminder — our annual Christmas parade and family fair is happening this Saturday, December 8th!

The parade will depart Pearlridge Elementary School at approximately 9am. Participants will march along Moanalua Road past Pearlridge before taking a left turn onto Kaamilo Street. They will then turn right onto Ulune Street past Aiea High School before ending at the old ‘Aiea Sugar Mill site next to ‘Aiea Public Library.

Please be aware that there may be increased traffic along the parade route between about 8:45am until about 10:30 am. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes.

The ‘Aiea Family Fun Fair will take place at the ‘Aiea Sugar Mill site from approximately 10am through 2pm. Come for entertainment, games, food, and bounce houses!

The annual ‘Aiea Community Christmas Parade and Fun Fair is a great event that celebrates the holiday season. We would like to extend an invitation to participate in the annual event in Aiea. This will be the 12th year for this holiday event. It will be held on Saturday December 8, 2018. The parade starts at 9am from Pearlridge Elementary School and ends at the Old Sugar Mill Site on Halewiliko Street, next to the ‘Aiea Public Library. The fun fair will follow at approximately 10am at the Old Sugar Mill site with games, entertainment, food, bouncers, and more.

The ‘Aiea Neighborhood Board will recess for the month of June. The board’s next meeting will be on July 9th at 7pm at the ‘Aiea Public Library.

The ‘Aiea Community Association will meet as usual on June 18, 2018 at 7:30pm at the ‘Aiea Public Library. Hope to see you there.

Councilmember Carol Fukunaga has submitted an amendment to the City Department of Planning and Permitting’s Transit Oriented Development (TOD) plan for Halawa, incorporating the ‘Aiea Sugar Mill property into the TOD zone.

The goal of this amendment is not to have more density, but to provide a buffer zone between the impending Aloha Stadium development and ‘Aiea’s residential areas. The amendment would also allow the sugar mill site to be included in any community benefit that transit oriented development will bring.

The ACA will continue to work with the Department of Planning and Permitting ont he Primary Urban Center plans/designations to ensure development consistent with the community’s needs and desires.
